The Story of The Joshua Tree
Supporting the emotional health and wellbeing of families affected by childhood cancers.
When a sibling is diagnosed with cancer, the entire family is affected. Siblings may feel fear, worry, anger, guilt, jealousy, and loneliness — emotions that can last long after treatment. At The Joshua Tree, we’re here to support siblings through these challenges.
Our sibling support services are designed to help children express their emotions in a safe and nurturing environment. These services include:
Siblings have the opportunity to meet with a member of our Family Support Team in a relaxed, comfortable setting. Whether at home, school, or at The Joshua Tree Support Centre, this is a time for free expression of emotions and concerns.
We offer ongoing activities and events for siblings, such as our monthly Saturday Sessions, where the whole family is invited to join in.
These sessions allow siblings to explore their feelings in a creative and supportive way.
For deeper emotional support, we offer individual counselling sessions to help siblings process their emotions and experiences.
We also provide support to schools, helping staff understand the long-term impact of childhood cancer on siblings and offering guidance to ensure the best possible support is in place.
If you have a brother or sister with cancer, you might be feeling a range of emotions that are hard to express. Sometimes, it can feel like your parents are too busy with the child who is unwell, and you might not know who to turn to for support.
At The Joshua Tree, our Family Support Team is here to listen. You can talk to us about how you’re feeling without worrying about upsetting anyone. We’re here to offer support, answer questions, and ensure you don’t have to face this journey alone.
If you feel this support would help you, ask your parents or carers to contact us so we can arrange a good time to talk. You don’t have to go through this alone — we’re here for you.
